The spiritualist movement spread and got big in the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century. With guidance of spiritualist mediums people tried to contact deceased relatives through seances. Some of the mediums produced ectoplasm. This substance came out from openings in the mediums body and was said to be the materialisation of spirits.
